Research

The University of Leeds has more than 20 years of experience conducting research across West, East, and Southern Africa.

Our approach is based on long-term, equitable partnerships with African universities, government agencies, NGOs, and private sector actors.

Leeds researchers work with partners to address locally defined development priorities through collaborative, co-produced research.

Real-world impact, capacity strengthening, and systems-thinking are central to our practice.

Our Africa-focused research has attracted more than £50 million in competitive external funding from UKRI (including GCRF, Newton Fund), FCDO, DSIT, and international philanthropic sources.

Projects led or co-led by Leeds have involved more than 50 African institutions across 20+ countries, building significant research and policy capacity across multiple sectors.
