Profile
I am a Professor of Accounting and Auditing with a background as a practising Chartered Accountant.
I earned my Master's in Accountancy from the University of the Witwatersrand and a PhD from King's College London.
Professional activity
I’m also a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
My professional journey includes significant roles at PricewaterhouseCoopers in South Africa (PwC), where I worked in various capacities before moving into academia.
I maintained a visiting role at PwC from 2010 to 2018 and continue to serve as a non-executive director of the Professional Provident Society (PPS) in South Africa.
I consult on accounting, assurance, and sustainability issues, including providing expert services in arbitration.
I actively contribute to different task forces, working groups, and committees, including those for the Integrated Reporting Committee of South Africa, the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors, and the Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa.
I also served on the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) from 2022 to 2024.
Academic activity
As an academic, I co-edit Meditari Accountancy Research and serve as an Associate Editor for various academic journals, including the British Accounting Review and The Journal of Accounting and Public Policy.
I’ve published numerous books, book chapters, and over 100 academic papers on corporate reporting and assurance.
