I have a long-standing interest in research and projects related to water and rivers on the African continent.
This interest arises partly from the continent's exceptionally diverse hydrology and cultures, but primarily from the strong professional collaborations and deep friendships developed through past and ongoing projects.
My experience in Africa encompasses a broad range of research, teaching, and consultancy work carried out in partnership with local institutions.
Notable examples include:
- conducting research and capacity-building initiatives in the Congo River basin alongside the Congo Basin Water Resources Research Center (CRREBaC) at the University of Kinshasa;
- addressing flood risk management in refugee camps in Ethiopia, collaborating with UNHCR and Addis Ababa University;
- contributing to 'build back better' initiatives for bridge reconstruction after the 2024 floods in Tanzania, in partnership with the World Bank, Tanroads, and the University of Dar Es Salaam;
- facilitating rapid city-scale flood modelling and response management following the 2024 floods in Nairobi, working with the Hydrological Society of Kenya and UNESCO.

CRuHM project team on the Congo River Expedition 2019
I have previously carried out research under the Royal Society-DFID funded CRuHM project and led the CRISP project focused on the Congo River Basin Science. Read more.
I am currently involved in the Congo Basin Hydrology Observatory as part of the new FCDO funded CRAFT project, under the Congo Basin Science Initiative.
