Current research

I am currently working on a pilot research project looking at careers of gay men in South Africa.

The project seeks to explore specific barriers, enablers, and strategies that shape careers of that group of career agents in a very specific context characterised by unique cultural, social, political, and legal mechanisms.

I have collected qualitative data in Western Cape and Gauteng and presently looking to expand and diversify the sample before commencing the data analysis.

Research interests

With colleagues from the University of Pretoria I am currently investigating an opportunity to collaborate on skills and labour migration research.

This project is particularly significant considering the status of South Africa as a sending and receiving country simultaneously.

Importantly, South Africa receives large volumes of migrants from the rest of the continent but also high numbers of migrants from the Global North, including digital nomads.

This presents a unique and under-researched context in which to explore the labour migration and skills.

My other interests include the use of domestic help in South Africa and issues around recruitment, training, and retention of staff in conservation areas in Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, and Namibia).

Other activity

I have also delivered guest lectures at the University of Stellenbosch.
