Alex Beresford researches the global politics of Africa, with particular attention to contemporary South African politics and how the country contributes to shaping the international order.

Their current focus is on African climate leadership and just transitions. As part of an interdisciplinary project funded by the Hans Böckler Foundation focused on 14 country case studies, they are investigating how workers, unions, NGOs and civil society define “justice” in transitions away from high-carbon industries. Alex is leading a case study exploring the country’s energy transition. Working as a part of a team co-producing knowledge with trade union partners in South Africa, this research includes interviews, focus groups and workshops with the workers and communities most immediately impacted by the transition.

Alex's previous work provides multi-layered insights into political struggles from everyday sites of politics through to the highest tables of power in South Africa.

They are currently an editor of the Journal of Southern African Studies and on the editorial boards of African Affairs and Critical African Studies.
